Pour ceux qui veulent plus de renseignements… la version english :
BOURNEMOUTH and Poole College is opening a ‘Surfing Academy’ from September 2009.
Students will learn the science and skills of the sport and have lessons from south coast champion Terry Crump.
They will not study ‘Surfing’ as a stand-alone subject, but as an optional part of a two or three year BTEC in outdoor adventure or sport.
Mr Crump believes the demand is there to make the academy a success.
The Echo spoke to him just after he had spent hours braving 14ft waves in the January sea at Kimmeridge Bay.
“Surfing is just massive – I have surfed all my life,” said the 30-year-old from Westcliff in Bournemouth. “
But the amount it’s grown over the years is just incredible.” Lessons will include surf fitness, nutrition, psychology, contest techniques, and lifeguarding.
The college already teaches surfing but wanted to go further. It also hopes to develop close links with the University of Plymouth, which offers a degree in Surf Science. Bournemouth and Poole College are initially inviting applications from 16-18 year olds.
The basic academic fees for the BTECs are around £200 to £250 with an as yet undecided extra charge for the surfing elements.
